Is A Reverse Osmosis Water Purifier Worth The Cost?

Author: Charles Harper

Osmosis is a natural process widely spread wherever there is life. It is a process responsible of maintaining cells' life and activity and, on this basis, responsible of maintaining life in general. In a few words, osmosis represents the movement of water through cells' membranes from a medium characterized by a high water potential to a medium with a low water potential. In other words, water passes from a low solute concentration to a high solute concentration. Reverse osmosis, on the other hand, is precisely the opposite process, representing the movement of water from a high solute concentration or a medium with low water potential to low solute concentration or high water potential. Reverse osmosis is a phenomenon having multiple applications at industrial scale, most of these applications having to do with water purification. Reverse osmosis water purifiers represent a reliable solution to some of our specific needs. Given the fact that nowadays pollution is an increasingly worrying issue, turning the use of a reverse osmosis system into a daily routine can guarantee that at least some of our concerns can be put aside. Of course, we all know that water is anyway purified, in case we are on a municipal water system. The chlorinated tap water provided to us every day should be a guarantee that someone has taken care of what we drink. But there is an old saying that goes like this: better safe than sorry. Reverse osmosis water purifiers can give you some peace of mind for that matter. But anyone may ask why they should choose a reverse osmosis system over other technologies used to purify water. Why is it, after all, that reverse osmosis water purifiers are the most convenient for us when it comes to purifying the water we drink and use daily? This is a completely legitimate question that will be answered immediately. First of all, it is reasonable to say that using a reverse osmosis system is much more inexpensive than buying bottled water, irrespective of the initial investment one has to make, that is, the purchase price. Compared to other technologies, reverse osmosis is much more recommendable and efficient because it involves the use of an especially designed filter through which water passes. This filter, or membrane, is rated at 0.0001 microns, and due to this feature, particles larger than 0.0001 microns can not pass and, eventually, can not reach into our drinking water. Thus, traces of lead, nitrates, sodium or even cysts may resist to the municipal system purification. But a reverse osmosis system certifies there is no chance for such particles to pass through the membrane. In addition, depending on the product you finally choose, you may have different advantages, with respect to the way it must be maintained, to the amount of water it produces per hour, to its installation, and so on. Briefly, it's one of the best deals you can make these days.
